There Is A Lot of Misinformation Around About Elimination Communication.

People are sometimes startled by the idea of 'Infant Potty Training', no doubt seeing images of babies with reward charts and stickers, portable potties perched on toilets far too high and large for a baby... But guess what? They are WRONG!

Infant Potty Training is a term used simply to make the concept accessible and easier to search for online and in libraries, so you can begin to explore what this ancient form of baby hygiene care is. In this article, we will look at 7 things that EC is not, to begin dispelling some of the so-called 'controversy'...

What Isn't Elimination Communication. 7 Insights Into Real Baby Pottying...

1. It isn't coercive - force is NEVER used.

2. It isn't punitive - the baby is NEVER punished.

3. It isn't a new age fad - it's a traditional practice. Throughout time, and in many countries, babies have a small environmental footprint thanks to Baby Pottying.

4. It isn't early toilet training - it's gradual, gentle toilet learning.

5. It doesn't mean you can't use diapers - you will. It doesn't mean you'll have to try to catch every elimination your baby does - that isn't the point, and is impossible anyway.

6. It doesn't mean you have to stare at your baby all day - you'll carry on as usual, and enjoy the ways of learning with your baby how to meet their needs.

7. It doesn't mean you'll never need to use diapers after a certain age or period of time - every EC journey is unique - like each baby.

When practicing EC you help your baby stay clean and dry until they gain independence in their own time, at their own pace - gradually. You'll be Part Time Diaper Free until you become diaper free at the right time for your family and your baby. You can learn the skills and abilities to bond with your baby in this way.

Is Infant Potty Training a Better Way?

No, being part time diaper free is another way of managing the hygiene needs of your baby, instead of full- time use of diapers and needing to change every diaper for years. Why not change a third less? Or half? One Less Diaper each day? That adds up to over a thousand diapers over three years!

EC is a parenting option - one you are lucky to be able to consider for your own family. People who practice EC definitely find it is the better way for them. A lot of the controversy around Infant Potty Training is mere misunderstanding by people who actually do not know how it is really practiced. You are beginning to see the differences now.

Personally, I would never be able to use diapers full time - that would be impossible for me to do, so normal is offering my baby a wee opportunity when he needs it. Perhaps your baby would enjoy it with you too? You can give EC a shot and see how you go!
