You Need to Pick a Potty! It's an Important and Physiologically Beneficial Piece of Equipment to Help Your Baby or Toddler Develop Independence With the Toilet...Whatever age your baby or toddler is, it is helpful to think through a few things before buying a potty...When preparing to practice elimination communication with your baby, you may wish to consider a number of helpful pieces of equipment. One commonly used item is a baby potty. There are a number of varieties especially suited to infant potty training on the market. A potty actually helps the baby or toddler to go, as it is a natural position to go in. With these 5 tips you will easily make the right choice... Consider these Five Aspects When You Are Selecting a Container to Use As a Potty:1. Ease of HandlingYou'll need to grab it and move it around - can you do this easily, can you do this one handed, can you move it easily with a little water in the bottom? You'll be moving the potty around with wee in it a bit - so make sure this will be EASY for you to do. 2. Pouring EaseIs it easy to pour into the toilet without pouring it on the seat? Would you have to lift the lid? Imagine doing it with one hand - this sort of thing will happen, when you have your baby in the other arm. A bit of toilet paper in the bottom helps 'solids' plop into the toilet more easily. It's certainly easier to wipe out a potty than clean a wriggling squirming child! 3. Rinsing Ease
Once you've emptied the contents into the toilet (or laundry tub -
it ends up in the same place), can you easily fit it under the basin
tap so you can rinse it out? 4. TemperatureWill you be able to warm it? That's a great tip so the cold plastic does not startle your baby. Keep it in the sunny spot, keep a hot water bottle on it, or make a cover - often called a "Potty Cosy" or "Potty Turtleneck". A tip to help baby relax and smile is to pour warm water into the upside-down potty then empty it before helping your baby to sit down. Consider getting a couple of potties in different colours or sizes
for variety, offering choice for baby once they are older - this is
the sort of strategy than can help you avoid 'potty pauses' - as
baby has some degree of choice. You can keep one in the boot of the
car with a sealed container for storing waste if needed. Naming the
potty is a great strategy when they are young toddlers - potty
preferences are a very real toddler phenomenon!
